When You Need Your Locks Changed

There are several situations where a lock change is the sensible choice. Maybe you've just moved into a new place and you're unsure who else has a key. Or you've lost your keys and can't account for where they are. Whatever the reason, updating your locks is a straightforward way to improve your home security.

  • New home — you don't know who had keys before you moved in. Changing the locks means you're the only one with access
  • Lost keys — if keys go missing, a lock change removes the risk of someone else using them
  • Old or worn locks — locks that are stiff, difficult to turn, or visibly worn may no longer provide adequate security
  • After a break-in — damaged locks need replacing, and it's a good time to upgrade to higher-security options
  • Relationship breakdown — if an ex-partner had keys, changing the locks gives you control over who can enter
  • Landlord changing tenants — a lock change between tenancies is standard practice

Call Premier Locksmith and Security on 020 3870 4458. We respond within 30 minutes across Ilford and East London.

How We Change a Lock

We start by assessing the type of lock you currently have and the door it's fitted to. This tells us exactly what replacement is needed and what tools to bring from the van.

For euro cylinders on UPVC and composite doors, we remove the fixing screw from the door edge, extract the old cylinder, and slide the new one in. The whole process takes around 10 minutes per lock.

For mortice deadlocks on timber doors, we remove the faceplate and lock body, then fit the replacement into the existing mortice pocket. We check the alignment, test the deadbolt throws fully into the keep, and fit new escutcheons if needed.

Once the new lock is installed, we test it multiple times with the door open and closed. We hand over all new keys — minimum three per lock — and make sure you're comfortable with how everything works before we leave.

Euro Cylinder Locks for UPVC Doors

Euro cylinder locks are the standard for UPVC and composite doors. They fit into the door's multipoint mechanism and can be replaced without changing the entire lock system, which makes them a quick and cost-effective upgrade.

We recommend euro cylinders with anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump, and anti-drill protection. These features defend against the most common break-in methods used across East London. Cylinders from Ultion and Yale meet these standards and carry insurance-recognised ratings.

Sizing matters. We measure the internal and external length of your existing cylinder to ensure the replacement fits perfectly. A cylinder that's too long sticks out from the door and becomes a target for snapping. We get this right every time.

If your current euro cylinder is a basic builder-grade model, upgrading to a high-security cylinder is one of the best single improvements you can make to your home security.

Mortice Deadlocks for Timber Doors

Mortice deadlocks are the go-to choice for timber front doors. The lock body fits inside the door itself, making it much harder to tamper with compared to surface-mounted locks.

For insurance compliance, you need a five-lever mortice deadlock rated to BS3621. This is a requirement from most UK home insurers. We fit locks from Chubb and Yale that meet this standard.

Installation requires precise cutting into the door — measuring the lock body position, drilling overlapping holes to create the mortice pocket, and chiselling out the recess. The strike plate and box keep on the frame need to be aligned so the deadbolt throws fully and engages securely.

If your timber door currently has an old or non-compliant lock, upgrading to a BS3621 deadlock brings you in line with insurance requirements and significantly improves your door's resistance to forced entry.

Multipoint Mechanisms

Multipoint mechanisms secure your door at multiple points — usually with hooks, bolts, or rollers — all operated by a single key turn and handle lift. This distributes force across the full height of the door, making it much harder to force open compared to a single lock.

These mechanisms are standard on UPVC and composite doors across Ilford and East London. They're effective, but the gearbox inside can wear out over time, especially on doors that see heavy daily use.

Signs the gearbox is failing: the handle feels stiff, the key won't turn fully, or the locking points don't engage when you lift the handle. If you're forcing it, the mechanism is on its way out.

We carry replacement gearboxes and can swap them on site. We also replace the euro cylinder at the same time if it's a basic model, so you get a full security upgrade in one visit.

Choosing the Right Security Level

The right lock depends on your door type, your property, and what your insurer requires. Here's a guide:

Door Type Recommended Lock Standard
Timber front door Five-lever mortice deadlock BS3621 (insurance required)
UPVC front door High-security euro cylinder TS007 3-star (anti-snap)
Composite front door High-security euro cylinder TS007 3-star (anti-snap)
Timber back door Mortice deadlock + rack bolts BS3621 + additional security
Internal doors Tubular latch + lever handles No security rating needed

Insurance Requirements and British Standards

Insurance companies require specific lock standards for your policy to be valid. If your locks don't meet these standards, a claim could be denied — even if you've been paying premiums for years.

BS3621 applies to mortice deadlocks on timber doors. A five-lever mortice deadlock rated to BS3621 is required on all external timber doors for insurance compliance.

TS007 3-star applies to euro cylinders on UPVC and composite doors. This standard tests resistance to snapping, drilling, picking, and bumping. A 3-star rated cylinder means it passed all tests independently.

Locks from Ultion, Yale, ERA, and Chubb meet these standards across their ranges. We can check your current locks during a visit and tell you exactly which ones meet your insurer's requirements and which need replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a lock change take?

A euro cylinder swap takes about 10 minutes. A mortice deadlock replacement takes 20-30 minutes. Most lock changes are completed in under an hour.

Do I need to change all my locks if I've lost one key?

Not necessarily. You can change just the affected lock, or rekey it to a new key pattern. We'll advise based on how many locks share the same key.

Will a new lock meet my insurance requirements?

Yes. We fit BS3621-rated mortice deadlocks and TS007 3-star euro cylinders that meet all UK insurance standards. We can provide documentation if needed.

How many keys do I get with a new lock?

We provide a minimum of three keys with every new lock. Additional keys can be cut on request.

Can you match my existing key to a new lock?

For most euro cylinder and mortice lock brands, yes. We can key-alike multiple locks so they all use the same key, which makes things simpler around the house.
