Signs Your Lock Needs Repair
It's easy to overlook the early signs that a lock needs attention. A minor inconvenience today can become a lockout tomorrow.
- Difficulty turning the key — if the key isn't turning smoothly, the cylinder may be worn or there's debris inside. Common on older euro cylinders fitted to UPVC doors across Ilford.
- Loose door handle — a wobbly handle usually means something has come loose inside the mechanism. On UPVC doors, this often points to a failing gearbox.
- Visible damage or rust — cracks, rust, or wear on the lock body compromise security. Mortice locks on timber doors in Victorian terraces and Edwardian semis are prone to this after years of use.
- Key won't go in fully — if the key catches or won't insert all the way, the pins or levers inside may be damaged or misaligned.
- Door won't latch properly — the strike plate may be misaligned or the latch mechanism is worn.
